How Many Versions Of Your Resume Do You Need - Work It Daily

How Many Versions Of Your Resume Do You Need - Work It Daily A lot of times, job seekers will contact me with help on their career document, then start rattling off a whole list of COMPLETELY different functions that they want to cover in the resume. Related: Top Thing Most People Forget To Include On Their Resume One recent client was hoping to try and cover human resources, event planning, and communications all in one document. Unfortunately, in today’s brave new world of applications, one size does not fit all. But does that mean everyone needs to be constantly chasing after a moving target, always changing the document to meet each job posting? Nope. You have to rethink your strategy completely and start seeing your resume as a themed asset. Here’s why... As we go through our careers, our background evolves into probably at least three or more different thematic areas. In my lifetime, I’ve been a meeting planner, television producer, tourism manager, educator, and resume writer, to name a few. Can I pull all of these areas under one roof/one resume? Not a chance. No one could possibly digest it all - there is too much stuff “muddying” the waters if, say, I were to apply to be a faculty member in a post-secondary school. The trick to hitting those moving target is to get grounded first. Focus On One Area Take a deep breath and think about what area you are actually going to have the highest degree of job search success. Then focus your efforts on that area. I would suggest one, two, but no more than three major areas. Then create a separate document for EACH of those themes. Create A 'Relevant History' Header Create a section header entitled “RELEVANT HISTORY,” then list the job records most relevant to the position to which you are applying first, then summarize (if necessary) any non-relevant ones to avoid distracting the reader. That way, you can account for any holes that open up in your work experience caused by moving non-relevant history into an “Additional Background” header. What you are saying to the potential employer is this: “Here’s the information that is RELEVANT to what you are hiring for... and oh, by the way, you’ll probably notice there are some holes in the work history, so down here, here’s some additional background that summarizes those non-relevant jobs. Want more info? Just ask me.” Keeping your document themed is critical to keeping your sanity and your job search in check. You need to be focused and centered on your core areas that will yield the highest level of job search success. Why? Because if you get spread out too thin, you’ll be too far and too wide in your job search efforts, and never get the vertical depth required to find employment success. You’ve heard of the “shotgun approach” to job seeking? When you are so scattered you end up running around all the time and not experiencing any traction, then you’ve slipped into that mode. Not a good place to be. Employers can smell desperation, and if they sense a lot of shape-shifting in your resume to try and make yourself more than what you really are to “fit” into a particular job mold, they will drop you like a hot potato. They are more interested in the highly qualified candidates than the “sorta” qualified ones. Instead, BE THE MOLD. Think thematic approaches in your document on your core strengths, experience, and expertise. Be centered on what you feel is your best “bet” (to borrow a poker euphemism) in finding a job. Then create a separate thematic resume in that area. This allows you to concentrate your experience, keywords, relevant involvement and professional development in that theme. The end result is you get a specific version of your resume in the proverbial can that is about 90% of the way there. Then, when you find a job posting that matches your target career goal, you’ll definitely need to do some tweaking to make sure your resume terminology matches the position announcement. That ensures your keyword “hit” ratio is as optimized as possible before you submit your resume as an application. But you won’t have to reinvent the wheel and start all over to create a new document. Job seekers simply cannot be constantly morphing documents into something that someone else wants. You need to be grounded in what it is you offer in a specific field, then tweak the resume to match and make sure the terms mirror one another. You’ll have better control over your job search, yield better results, and not have the feeling that you are constantly chasing ghosts. This post was originally published at an earlier date. How HR Can Earn a Seat at the Table - Your Career Intel

How HR Can Earn a Seat at the Table - Your Career IntelThe most common question I receive from candidates for CHRO or VP of HR positions isnt about salary, work-life fit or even company culture. Before these candidates decide to throw their hat in the ring to explore an opportunity, they all ask meDoes HR have a seat at the executive table?I understand their concern. The verrotten CHRO can help a company restructure HR from a transactional department that exists primarily to monitor compliance to a strategic function that generates independent value. Doing so requires a significant shift in strategy and mindset and candidates want to know theyre on equal footing with the executive team from day one.Even companies that profess to be ready for change, however, can be reluctant to give HR a true seat at the executive table. Its not unusual for candidates to join a company and contact me a month or two months later and say, This isnt what I expected. Im not part of the conversation. Thats why my answer to that candidate question is always the same. You have to make your own seat.Earning Your Seat with the Executive gruppeSuccessful HR Leaders are persistent and resilient. They dont wait for the executive team to invite them to the table. They own their role in driving change and take the initiative from day one. Use interview rounds as an opportunity to begin educating company leadership on your approach and process. For example, one of your most important tasks will be to learn the companys business. For executives, it can be difficult to understand the value of this approach immediately. Why should their new HR leader spend time sitting in on meetings with clients instead of overseeing compliance concerns? You need to own the need to bring a business understanding to HR and take the initiative to truly learn dont wait to be invited to meetings.Dont try to skip this step its where the magic happens.A common saying in the business world is People is your biggest asset, but they will not become an asset until you develop them to be successful for your company. And you cant develop them for your company if you dont fully understand the companys business and mission. Connect people and culture needs to the businessHeres where you start connecting what youve learned about the business to your companys talent needs. For example, if turnover rates are high, what insights can your learnings provide? Perhaps theres a disconnect in the training process that leaves the sales team ill-prepared to answer client questions, thus sales associates struggle to make their numbers. Maybe the bonus structure fails to adequately incent ivize performance benchmarks. Perhaps the product itself isnt delivering on its promises, and thus the team doesnt feel great about selling it.A challenge like productivity, engagement or turnover wont have a single, clear-cut answer. These complex issues are why its so important to have a holistic view into all aspects of operations so you as their new HR leader can connect people, culture and business.Own Your RoleChange is tough. Being an agent of change is even tougher. This is a challenge many HR Leaders are tasked with today, and many struggle to realize the plans and goals they set out to achieve. If you find yourself not being invited to the table, it will be tempting to blame the companys old-school mentality and unwillingness to lebenspartner with HR. Im a Single Mom with 3 Kids and a Demanding Career Heres How I Make it Work If yure a working mom, you know all too well that finding and maintaining a balance between your career and your personal life is no easy feat. As Colleen Campbell, director of Operations Excellence at West Monroe Partners, puts it, Im very busy, and my job can be demanding, but for the fruchtwein part, it works. I can be a parent and not feel guilty about it.A single mom with three kids, Campbell acknowledges that some days are easier than otherbeis. But she also says she wouldnt change anything. How does she do it? For starters, she feels like shes able to set expectations at work. I was very clear when I took the role with West Monroe that I needed to be at home for my kids at times, Campbell says. She adds that her manager is very supportive in fact, he is often the person reminding her to keep a healthy balance.Recently, Campbell shared with Fairygodboss how her role as a mom has made her a better employ ee, her go-to stress relief routines, and her No. 1 tip for moms who are navigating the delicate balance of working and mothering. How long have you been in your current role, and what were you doing previously?Ive been at West Monroe Partners for 6 months. Prior to that, I built and managed a national change management practice for another consulting firm.Whats your pre-work morning routine like?Im a single mom with three kids ages 8, 10 and 13. So Im very busy getting my kids and myself out the door by 745. Im usually up at 5 a.m. reading emails, preparing for my day, meditating when I can, getting three tired and usually grumpy kids out of bed, eating breakfast, making lunch, getting dressed, and finally kisses and out the door. Its not easy, but its a privilege to be a mom. Some days are easier than others, but I wouldnt change it.Why do you think West Monroe is a particularly great place to be a working mom?I was very clear when I took the role with West Monroe that I needed to be at home for my kids at times supporting Girl Scouts, playdates, home needs, activities, planning trips and more. As a director, Im very busy, and my job can be demanding, but for the most part, it works. My manager is very supportive. He reminds me to keep a balance.I can be a parent and not feel guilty about it. It sounds strange, but some workplaces and managers are not as supportive. Especially as a single mom, I need to be home or at events when I need to be there. West Monroe is supportive of that even though I manage it well for the most part. How has your role as a mom made you a better employee?I have a lot of patience and understanding for other employees. I know work isnt easy at times for many. I bring a positive attitude and care for others greatly. I try to bring a more human side to the workplace and have built great relationships with all I meet. I also mentor a lot of other women. Im doing my part to make West Monroe more diverse and inclusive so that younger women (my daughter included) will have more opportunities than I did when I was beginning my career.Whats your go-to stress-relief activity or routine?Meditation and lots of exercise. I work out often to release stress, including lifting weights and running. Hugging and being there for my kids makes me feel good about life. I also have a very active social life, fun family, and great friends. Im blessed to be surrounded by good people. What kinds of boundaries do you follow (if any) to separate work and family time? Its tough, but Ive learned to say no when its not a priority so I can focus on my kids. This has been really hard to learn, and I still have a long way to go.What are you especially good at as a mom? What about at work?Im good at connecting with my kids. I dont strive to be a perfect mom, but I do work on being a good mom. I talk with my kids about everything, and all three kids share whats on their minds.Ive had conversations about many topics that have been sensitive in natur e, so its good to know they trust me to share their mind even when its hard or embarrassing. At work, Im good at growing the business, building the practice, creating new methodologies and leading effective teams. I bring a lot of relationship building, strategy, and creativity and unstoppable attitude to my work.Whats your No. 1 tip for new moms who are navigating the delicate balance of working and mothering? Dont try to be perfect just be yourself. There is no right way to be a mom. Trust your instincts.Whats your favorite aspect of your job?Building collaboration across our firm and pushing our company to be innovative. What do you love most about your company? Its a great culture. I like that the leading men very often acknowledge their wives for helping them be successful. I never experienced that in other firms. I feel like I truly can make a difference at West Monroe and I dont hold back. I feel like I can be successful and be myself. Thats so important to me since Im creativ e yet very strategic. I need to stretch boundaries and push others to think big.--Fairygodboss is proud to partner with West Monroe Partners.Find a job there today

Gender divers ity provides huge benefits in the workplace. pWhile some industries have made significant advancements in gender diversity, some industries lag further behind... and the construction industry is well-known for being in the latter category. If someone says, construction workers, youll likely picture a group of men in yellow hard hats analyzing an architects plans or laying bricks on top of a scaffold. And men at work signs only help to reinforce this image.pThis stereotype is rooted in reality. When was the last time you actually spotted a woman on a construction site? Or hired a female plumber or carpenter? Your answer is most likely never. In fact, the Bureau of Labor Statisticsreports that only 3.4% of the total of 8.3 million construction employees are women.pBut the construction industry has a lot more to offer than steel-toed boots and hard hats, and it needs women to help advance the industry in this era of rapid change. Here are 5 reasons why women joining the workforce or looking to make a pivot should consider a career in construction.h21. Fuel Innovation/h2pNot only is diversity the socially and morally right thing to do, but it is also actually an excellent business strategy. pResearch presented in the Harvard Business Reviewshows that diverse teams develop more innovative ideas. This is further supported by a study conducted by Gallupon the performance of gender-diverse teams versus single-gender teams, which found that the difference in backgrounds and perspectives led to better business performance and problem-solving. h22. Capitalize on Demand/h2pThe construction industry is currently experiencing a labor shortage. The industry itself is booming and projected to be one of the fastest-growing industries, with total spending projected to exceed $1.45 trillion in 2023/a. However, most construction companies are unable to meet the rising demand. pAccording to the Associated General Contractors of America/a, more than 80% of contractors are experiencing difficulties filling hourly craft positions that represent the bulk of the construction workforce.pAnd demand isnt limited to individual contributor roles. Given the industry boom, there are a number of open stable and high-paying roles (any project managers out there?) waiting for the right candidateh23. Leadership Opportunities/h2pAccording to the Bureau of Labor Statistics/a, women compose only 7.7% of the total 1 million managerial positions in construction.br/pBut given the highly collaborative nature of construction work, more women in leadership roles would help drive innovation and enhance productivity.Furthermore, as a woman in construction in a leadership position, youd have the unique opportunity to drive change for the industry and make it a more attractive option for other women.h24. High-Income Potential/h2pSalaries for many skilled positions in construction are on the rise, making a construction career a prime choice for women looking f or a high-paying job,pThe 2018 Construction Craft Salary Surveyconducted by the National Center for Construction Education and Research revealed that salaries for many skilled craft areas are increasing. Project managers and project supervisors topped the list at $92,523 and $88,355, respectively. The next set of highest-paying jobs include those of combo welders ($71,067), instrumentation technicians ($70,080), pipe welders ($69,222), power line workers ($68,262) and industrial electricians ($67,269). Of the 32 categories of workers in the survey, 19 positions earned an average salary of $60,000 or higher.h25. Sense of accomplishment/h2p The construction industry can give employees a unique sense of achievement. Yes, the job is stressful and the work can be demanding, but nothing beats the feeling of being able to build something from the ground up. pHow many professionals in other industries can point at a school, a hospital, or a skyscraper and say I helped build that?pThe constr uction industry has a long way to go in combating gender bias and supporting women in the workforce, but given the current demand for workers, theres no better time to pick up a sledgehammer (figurative or literal) and smash the gender stereotypes plaguing the construction industry.
